Architect, PhD in Art History, Dominique Rouillard is founding member of Architecture Action sarl, office for architecture and urban design. She is a tenured professor at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture Paris-Malaquais (ENSAPM) where she is scientific director of LIAT (Laboratoire Infrastructure Architecture, Territoire). She is adjunct professor at AMUR and Smart Mobility masters program at Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées. Dominique Rouillard is the author of numerous publications querying the history and genesis of constructions and representations of modern and contemporary architecture and the city, connecting the ideas of site, monument, memory and heritage, utopia and counter-utopia. She has notably published Construire la pente. Los Angeles 1920- 1960 (Paris, 1984), tr. Building the slope. California Hillside Houses 1920-1960 (Santa Monica, 1987, reed. 1999), Superarchitecture. Le futur de l’architecture 1950-1970 (2004), and recently, with A. Guiheux, Door-to-door. Future of the vehicle, future of the city. She has recently published Politique des infrastructures. Persistance, effacement, disparition (Metis Presses 2018).

Abstract

Equally fascinated by the space frame, Yona Friedman and Eckhard Schulze-Fielitz came up with one of the most powerful alternative answers to the international crisis of urbanism and architecture in the late fifties and through the sixties. Megaspacestructure will be the portmanteau forged to encompass their common and distinctive view. The blended word subsumes the overriding features of their production, which impacted the theory of architecture and still question – up until this reassessment of their work – the “future of the city” as both project and fiction.
